I haven't seen one yet, and have only heard of one who had the conversion done but it was a test mule by Daimler-Chrysler. I don't think we'll see very many Hemi conversions for awhile, because you have to dump the PCM, replace the gauge face, replace the transmission, etc. etc. It would probably cost less, have fewer headaches, and produce more horsepower to just build up a solid 408 stroker motor.

what is all needed to do a conversion?

I have to be honest.... as many durango's you've bought in the last two years... you should probably have thought about what motor was in the next one... It just seems to me that maybe your next one will have a hemi in it... so don't worry about throwing one in your current durango... you're talking lots of money. Chances are the cost difference between teh 5.7L and the 4.7L are minimul in relation to the overall price of your next durango.... spring for the 5.7L, you won't be disappointed.

of course it can be done. anything can be done. all you need is lot and lots of $$$, and patience and time

Umm, it MAY not be as hard as you may think... The 45RE's are used in Hemi powered Rams believe it or not, so I am set transmission-wise... The PCM and engine... Hmm.. PITA, find one off of ebay, I have seen em going for $2500-ish... The Hemi is too wide for fitting between the fenderwells of a Dakota, but modifications can be done, but not for cheap... All in all, if i ever get like, $5k outta nowhere somehow, I'll give it a shot

I'd skip on the 5.7 and put a cummins in there...but then again, money is the important factor.. :biggthump

This horse has been shot, ran over, and blown up...

The cost relative to the power you get makes it just plain stupid.

The 408 you could build would have much more power, and probably be more reliable.

All your spending your money on is that word..."Hemi"

If Im spending my money on a word..il go with "stroker"

Hi,

i'm in a process to swap a 5.7 Hemi in my R/T 98.

I have the motor for 6 month and i just purchase the R/T 2 weeks ago.
Very clean Dakota(never see winter) in Canada.

Need some mods(power) to the wiring harness to fit on the on the R/T.
Working on the harness presently.

I check the dimensions for the Hemi:

http://www.hotrodlane.cc/

It have plenty room on the engine bay to put the Hemi.

The only problem(not shure) is the ex manifold connector(close to firewall)
for connecting the Y.
see when i drop the motor.

Probably take a couple of month to finalise the swap.

That's my new Toy to tow my other Toy:

Mazda MX-3 2.0 L turbo (drag car)
10.8 @ 127 on the 1/4

i saw somthing the other day on like popular mechanics (i think) covering i think the 2000 sema show-they had a pic of a dakota frame with a hemi crate motor and had about a paragraph talking about a mopar dakota-hemi conversion kit

--guess mopar decided not to make it :cussing: :cussing:

that was a 528 hemi no less. you can do it just plan on never driving on the street legally again. the engine bay is plenty big once you remove everything that is not needed and relocate stuff that is needed.

Rad Rides built a 2000 Dakota for Chrysler. They installed a 526 Injected Hemi but tore it down latter and installed it in a Cuda.

There are no plans to put a Hemi in a Dakota. For one when Dodge redesigned the Durango it went from the Dakota frame to the Ram frame giving it enough room to put in the 5.7 Hemi. Besides, the big boat needs the extra HP just to move it’s heavy butt around.

For the sake of the mass production fitting a Hemi into a Dakota is not going to happen. You can do it yourself providing that you have the money and a well equipped shop. The big block requires you to move the firewall back about 4 inches and you must cut out the old motor mounts and weld in new ones. Not to mention all of the other work that is required.

The 5.7 fit’s a little easier then the older 426 blocks but it still requires a lot of work and a ton of cash to pull it off. You will be money ahead if you stick with the 360 or the newer 402 crate engines. The 402 puts out way more HP then the stock 5.7 and is a whole lot easier to install. For less cash you can install a blown 402 that generates around 550 horses.

If you can install a 5.7, wouldn't it be just as easy to install a 6.1?

Yes, if you assume the 5.7 will fit, the 6.1 or even the new 392 Hemi announced at SEMA will fit. Cost is another matter however.......

How much more difficult could it be to put in a 6.1 than a Viper V10? Costly? Maybe but it probably depends on your ability to do the work yourself.

With 2 extra cylinders, the v10 Viper engine is a LOT tougher to fit (not counting the EXTRA cost for an outdated design).

...By about 6 inches in length compared to any of the mentioned Hemi v8's (I get the feeling you do not know what the 392 is, is that correct?), the v10 engine would require moving the entire IP and what is incorrectly called the "firewall" back by that amount to fit the v10 engine into the framerails.

Best regards,

Bob Sheaves

Looks like swapping out for a Hemi is beginning to be popular. I have a 97 Dak V6 and have a 5.7L Hemi in an engine stand. I hope to begin the swap in early January. right now I am doing my research and collecting parts.

Stevebdak, thanks for the info! My 2006 5.7 hemi engine should be here next week it has 4k miles on it. I would like recommendations on a cam, headers computer upgrade, and any info on available nv3500hd tranny's. (I would like to have a cam lope at idle.)

Hemi_Kota, sounds great... Lets stay in touch... We may be able to help each other out with our projects. My Hemi motor is a 2003 with 2 broken piston connecting rods. Motor is going in the shop 1 Dec for a rebuild. I am looking for an old Dakota 92-93 to buy to put my current 3.9L into for something to drive. Wife would prefer I don't take her SUV to the PaperMill everyday while I do the swap. Something about how the smell............
